BBL stands for Broad Band Light. This is the next generation of IPL (Intense Pulse Therapy) and an innovative skin treatment procedure that uses corrective phototherapy.
At MD Cosmetic and Skin Clinic in Maroochydore, we are skilled in using BBL to target signs of ageing, sun damage, and loss of skin firmness. We also use BBL to treat acne, redness or rosacea, brown pigmentation, such as freckles and age spots, uneven skin texture, and other skin conditions.
How does BBL manage to help with skin rejuvenation and restore skin to its natural beauty?
BBL is phototherapy, delivering light energy with great precision to target and gently heat upper layers of the skin. This heat stimulates your skin cells to regenerate.
Different to a laser, BBL uses the entire visible light spectrum. Filters are used to effectively and safely treat various skin conditions and signs of ageing, including:
- Redness flushing from rosacea & sun damage
- Skin laxity
- Uneven skin texture & tone
Who Needs BBL?
Any area of skin on your body can be treated with BBL. The face, neck, chest, hands and arms can all experience long-term benefits.
When brown spots and damaged skin are targeted with BBL, the treated skin particles will peel or flake off within 7-14 days.
When redness is targeted, BBL phototherapy will cause the blood vessels in the superficial layers of the skin to contract.
You’d be drawn to BBL as a therapy if you have poor skin tone and texture, including fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, or sun-damaged skin. It is a treatment designed to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin. You don’t need to wait till your in your 40’s-50’ to commence treatments, younger skin responds quickly to BBL sessions and requires less correction ie pigmentation and redness
You’d also appreciate there’s no need for downtime, as there is for people needing time off to heal from laser resurfacing or chemical peels.
What does BBL therapy feel like?
A cool gel is first applied to the treatment area. The BBL therapy is then delivered by a chilled applicator placed on the skin.
After BBL, it can feel like a mild sunburn in the treated area which may also have a flushed
Appearance is easily covered with light medical makeup (oxygentix) that is soothing and provides sun protection.
After BBL treatment, you will most likely be sensitive to sunlight. Applying sunscreen and other skin care products as directed by your provider .
How many BBL treatments are needed?

Sessions are generally performed every 2-6 weeks, with 3 to 5 treatments normally needed for full correction. Additional treatments would typically apply for treatment of rosacea and vascular sun damage.
